BBC launches iPlayer

The BBC has launched its on-demand TV service – the iPlayer - It lets viewers download a selection of their favourite programmes from the past week. The programmes are free and without advertising.
Once downloaded, viewers then have up to 30 days to watch the programme.
The BBC says that people can now register for the service and will then be invited to join.
The number of users will increase over the summer, before a full launch in the autumn.
Extra features will be added to BBC iPlayer in future, including streaming on-demand which will allow viewers to watch a programme straight away.
The BBC hopes to launch the iPlayer on cable later this year followed by other TV platforms.
There are also plans for mobile users to be able to access the iPlayer, which will contain 400 hours of BBC programming each week, on their handsets.
The iPlayer has been criticised because it is only currently compatible on PCs with the Windows XP operating system.
The BBC Trust has said the BBC must widen the access to iPlayer as soon as possible and has ordered a review every six months.
